Year 9
Listed below are the activities designed specifically with Year 9 in mind - activities range from Level 3 to Level 8. They can be done as part of a themed activity day, across a number of lessons or simply when appropriate to meet the needs of the school's Scheme of Work. All themes are suitable for a range of abilities although some are for mixed groups whilst others are targetting specific National Curriculum levels. There is nothing to stop the activities being used with pupils in other year groups, however, this can lead to duplication of activity or may be of less interest to pupils in that age group.
Family Holiday
Everyone wants something different from a family holiday so much planning is required to ensure everyone ends up happy from working to a budget, timetabling and scheduling excursions to cramming everything into a suitcase this unit highlights some of things that parents consider when taking the family away.
Olympics
London 2012 was a huge success and the result of many years planning. This unit covers everything from analysing sports statistics to collecting data from holding a similar in-class event. Tasks can be changed to match the year's biggest sporting events or use data from previous Olympics.
Room Decor
Redecorating a favourite space with everything from the colour of the walls to the furniture to the last details can be very costly and in most cases compromises will need to be made. This unit considers a number of factors and focuses, particularly on shape and space elements of Mathematics.
Career Choice
Often from a young age children dream about what they would like to be when they are older but all too often decisions made at a young age, either in terms of subjects taken or more often socially, can make it more difficult to realise the dream. As well as looking at the costs involved in achieving the dream this unit encourages pupils to begin to think about life beyond the classroom.
Playground Design
Children of all ages enjoy running around outside and playing on swings and slides but have you ever considered all the physics involved in ensuring that a ride is safe, yet exciting enough to thrill a child. Through considering the design of a playground pupils will look at forces in context to reinforce maths in action.
Fundraising
A unit that assists with organising an event for a fundraising opportunity - whether its a sponsored silence, a coffee morning or book sale.
